“Meeting so many remarkable people in such a short period felt like using a cheat

code in a video game!”

“Bumblekite MLSS wasn't just a summer school; it is a community that continues

to enrich my life.”

“…one of the best experiences of my PhD career: a fantastic week in Zurich!”

“I've managed to interact with at least 30 very passionate people from different

countries around the world working in my field and engage with them professionally. We

intend to support each other throughout our career.”

“The Bumblekite week has massively increased my motivation to learn more about

machine learning and apply it to the healthcare field.”

“I appreciated the thoroughness of the questions and the evident care with which our

opinions were considered. From my perspective, it seemed that every response we gave,

whether in the application form, our expectations, or during the daily reflections, was

carefully read and considered.”

“It was one of the best organised events I attended…”

“I also feel motivated to go back to my work and GET IT DONE :)”

“The knowledge and connections I've made here were priceless…”

“One of the most insightful weeks of my life. I would love to go back in time and experience it

for the first time again.”

“The summer school has quite literally broadened my horizons and I've returned home with a

renewed passion for my work and plenty of new ideas to try…”

“This experience has been profoundly eye-opening, filling me with new knowledge and

motivation from meeting so many inspiring individuals!”

“Over the course of the Bumblekite week, my professional network has grown significantly. I

had an excellent experience and found the quality of the people I met to be outstanding.”

“I joined Bumblekite in 2024 as a student. It was my first time in Switzerland, and spending five days at ETH Zürich learning alongside scientists and Roche colleagues from across the organisation felt special. I returned in 2025 as part of the staff, leading morning energisers and end-of-day summaries, which gave me another opportunity to learn and build relationships with people passionate about advancing AI in healthcare.

Some of those relationships later crossed paths again at the first Poland Healthcare Datathon in Gdańsk.

Michał Maciejewski was the driving force behind the initiative, leading a huge collaborative effort across Roche, academic and clinical partners. Małgorzata Bartosik drove the Datathon, Klaudia Kantor the LLM-athon taking place alongside it, Łukasz Nawrot kept a very complex effort coordinated and moving forward, and Joanna Kania led communications and engagement.

These are only a few names from a much bigger story. Hundreds of people contributed: colleagues, clinicians, scientists, organisers, volunteers, mentors and speakers from across Poland and abroad. Roche worked closely with the University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk and other academic and healthcare partners to make the event possible.

Bumblekite also connected me with people who later contributed to that wider effort. I met Leo Celi there in 2024; he brought scientific substance to the Datathon and helped connect other Bumblekite participants with the event. Pascalle Rovers contributed valuable healthcare expertise, while Juan Banda travelled to Poland to mentor participants. I was fortunate to be one of the many contributors, including working with AWS on the secure environment used by participants.

For me, that is the lasting value of Bumblekite: learning, friendships and connections that continue long after the five days at ETH Zürich, sometimes becoming part of something much bigger.”
